Holiday shopping doesn’t have to be “all in the mall”. Small Business Saturday – The Saturday after Thanksgiving is a shopping day designed to showcase America’s small businesses. Created by American Express in 2010, Small Business Saturday celebrates the importance of supporting small businesses, the jobs they create and the culture they promote in their communities. Here are a few ways the various cities and boroughs of San Diego County are promoting their small businesses:


The main street: Cardiff 101 Main Street offers street sales, local delicacies and temporary producer shops from 11:00 am to 3:00 pm on November 26 in Cardiff City Center, 2033 San Elijo Ave., and surrounding areas. Retailers such as Emmy Lou Jewelry, Soul Spark Candles, Saunt Eyewear, Monthly Ritual, Bronzed Bums, OTSO Sport USA and Cardiff 101 will be participating in the promotion. A limited edition poster by Christina Zeller will be gifted to customers who buy from participating companies. Visit


Hospitality occurs: Carlsbad Village Association staff and volunteer ambassadors watch Small Business Saturday at the Hospitality Booth, open from 10:00 am to 5:00 pm on November 26 on Grand Avenue and State Street. They will distribute bags with the Shop Small and Carlsbad logo to the first 100 people; reusable bags from the city of Carlsbad (while available) and other Karlovy Vary little things; and $1,500 lunch gift cards. No purchase is required to win a gift card, but participants will have additional opportunities to get more chances in the draw. Shop Small: People at One Paseo call it Shop Small Saturday, but the spirit is the same, encouraging visitors to visit the mall’s 40 shops and restaurants. Guests can enjoy festive decor, lights, and festive events, including the annual tree lighting at 5:00 pm. This event will also feature live music performances, snow falling from rooftops, Santa Claus and special guests. Stores will offer specials like Marrow (20% off Lunar pendants and select chain designs) and Shop Good (20% off $100+ purchases). One Paseo is located at 3725 Paseo Place. Pick it up in the city center: Enjoy discounts and in-store promotions from a variety of downtown Chula Vista businesses starting Nov. 26 through the end of December. Downtown runs roughly along Third Avenue from H Street to E Street. There is also a Village Market on Third Avenue every Sunday from 10:00 am to 2:00 pm.


Chamber Campaign: The Encinitas Chamber of Commerce is supporting “Small Business Saturday” with a two-sided holiday campaign. The chamber will distribute a digital coupon book that will include links to discounts and special offers from members of the chamber, advertised on the pages of the chamber on social networks. The chamber is also launching a “Surfy the Snowman” social media campaign inspired by “The Elf on the Shelf” to raise awareness of the chamber’s business. Twice a week from November 26 to December 17, Snowman Surfy’s holiday adventures will be posted on the chamber’s Facebook and Instagram pages. Each post will highlight the business and announce a $25 gift card giveaway. Hints will be given a day before each post where Surfy is next. Participants must follow the Encinitas Chamber of Commerce page and the participating company, like the post and tag a friend. Entrants will also be entered into a grand prize draw on December 21st for one night’s stay at the Alila Marea Beach Resort.


Discounts, special offers and prizes: Discover special treats, sales and discounts downtown as you collect stamps to complete your bingo card. Participants’ opening hours vary from 6:00 to 20:00. Earn bonus squares for purchases and participation in events such as a photo booth, art activities, and downtown lighting ceremony. When you get the bingo, log in to win an Escondido experience pack (worth between $200 and $1,000) or keep shopping and collecting stamps. Craft Fair: Fallbrook celebrates Small Business Saturday by hosting a free annual Craft Fair that showcases local crafts. The fair, which will take place from 9:00 am to 3:00 pm on November 26 in the city center on Main Avenue between Hawthorne and Alvarado streets, also features art and live music. A farmers’ market will also be open from 9:00 am to 3:00 pm nearby, on Main Avenue between Alvarado and Fig streets. Visit


Take the challenge: Main Street Oceanside, Oceanside Economic Development, and the Oceanside Chamber of Commerce are hosting several events on Saturday for small businesses, starting with Challenge on vacation by the ocean. Sign up at and download the Goose Chase trash search mobile app. Then visit Oceanside businesses, destinations and events from November 26th to December 11th for a chance to win local prizes. No purchase is required to participate. The gaming app directs you to local businesses, destinations, and events to take selfies or videos. Each completed task earns one or more points towards local prizes. Each point earned in the game equals one entry into the draw. Ocean Beach: The Ocean Beach Mainstreet Association encourages everyone to join the annual Saturday Small Business Celebration from 10:00 AM to 4:00 PM on November 26th by shopping on the spot. Customers who display an Ocean Beach Mainstreet Association welcome booth worth $50 or more in checks from purchases made that day at OB stores will have a chance to win OB gift cards. The welcome booth will be located under the balloon arch at the 4900 block of Newport Avenue, across from the Ocean Beach Antique Mall. OBMA also invites visitors to visit the booth to learn more about what OBMA has to offer. Logan Heights: Logan Heights Community Development Corporation is hosting a three-part event from 11:00 am to 3:00 pm for Small Business Saturday. It runs along Imperial Avenue between 19th and 31st Streets and includes food tastings, a business passport program, and an art walk. Guests can purchase tickets for Taste of Imperial Avenue at Those who participate in Taste by purchasing a ticket or participating in the Passport Program (visiting six local small businesses) will have access to the Small Business Community Family Saturday Celebration at the Gilliam Family Public Space (2835 Imperial Ave.) from the game on the outdoor lawn, live DJ, free beer and special guests from San Diego Loyals SC and San Diego Sockers. Barrio Logan: All for Logan is sponsoring the Logan Loteria, available at participating businesses on Logan Avenue from noon to 7:00 pm from November 25 to 27. Get 10% off your $5 Loteria card purchase, then collect stickers to complete your Loteria card. The proceeds go to community projects.

Spiritual walk along Adams Avenue: The seventh annual Adams Avenue Spirit Walk takes place from 2 to 5 pm on November 26 as part of the nationwide celebration of Small Business Sabbath. Strollers can sip celebratory cocktails and eat treats at 21 independent retail stores along Adams Avenue, from University Heights to Normal Heights to Kensington. This small business holiday celebration is for adults 21 and older only.

Small Italy: Little Italy will host the Small Business Season starting November 26th and running until the end of December. Deals and discounts will be available at many boutiques, home improvement stores, galleries and other locations in and around Indian Street, including Stroll, Valmare, Atacama Surf Shop, The Lion’s Mane and more. Online shopping will be available from many companies and some will offer pickup. Little Italy is found mainly on Kettner Boulevard, India Street, and Columbia Street.

North Park: Businesses in the North Park business district will be offering sales and specials from 11:00 am to 3:00 pm on November 26, as well as live music, giveaways, social media sweepstakes, gift bags, and more. The event will start at 10:30 am at Pretzels & Pints, 3812 Ray St. with guest speakers: Assemblyman Chris Ward, councilor Stephen Whitburn’s office representatives, and North Park Main Street CEO Mark West.
